Bark Collars By Breed Chart

Finding the right barking collar for your dog can be tricky, since there are multitude of models to choose from. However, it all comes down to identifying the features of that dog collar and whether it’s suitable for your pet or not. With that in mind, we created a list with common dog breeds and the best collars you can use for them. 

Keep in mind this is only a guide, there will always be situations when some dogs will not be ok with the collar you chose for them. These collars are also recommended for healthy adults, and they might not be suitable for puppies.

Akita

Even if Akita is not a barker, they can be tricky to handle sometimes. An electric static collar is an ideal option for them.

Alaskan Malamute

It’s an extraordinary breed with great pedigree. They don’t bark a whole lot, however due to them being a dominant breed you should use a static electric collar if possible.

Aussie Bulldog

An Aussie Bulldog is full of energy and can bark quite a bit. A good electric barking collar does the trick for them.

Aussie Shepherd

This is not a breed that barks a whole lot, yet they are very temperamental. Spray collars might not be ideal since they have a longer coat, but others work very well.

Beagle

Beagles are a common pet, and they do tend to bark quite a bit. Electric collars are ideal for them because they can be temperamental at times.

Belgian Malinois

A Belgian Malinois is a hard worker and extremely intelligent. They bark from time to time, and an electric static collar does the trick for them.

Bichon Frise

These dogs are cute, small and funny. They are also natural barkers, but not headstrong. However, a citronella spray collar or a static collar will be fine for them.

Blue Heeler / Aussie Cattle

This one is a very common dog in Australia and will bark quite a bit. An electric collar is good, so don’t opt for a spray option.

Border Collie

Since the Border Collie runs and barks, getting a spray collar won’t help. Electric options are ideal here, so keep that in mind.

Boxer

A Boxer will bark quite often and that’s why getting a manual set electric collar is ideal. If the Boxer is timid, then a spray collar might work as well.

Bull Arab

Get an electric collar for the Bull Arab and you won’t have a problem.

Bull Mastiff
People use Bull Mastiffs for hunting or as a guard. While multiple collars can work for them, an electric bark collar is usually the better option!
Bull Terrier

Although the Bull Terrier won’t bark that much, they can be very challenging at times. You might not need a collar for them, but if you do, go for a static collar.

Cairn Terrier

Cairn Terriers are defensive barkers. Citronella collars are usually the best ones for this particular breed.

Cavalier King Charles

This is another breed where a citronella collar is ideal. For a stubborn Cavalier King Charles you can choose a manual set static collar.

Chihuahua / Toy Breeds

Toy breeds might be small, but they are natural barkers. Static or spray collars will do just fine here.

Cocker Spaniel

A Cocker Spaniel barks from time to time, but nothing too much. Most of the time a manual set electric collar will be enough for them.

Corgi

Corgi are not exactly barking that often, so going with a spray collar will be ok. Of course, you can go with an electric collar if the barking doesn’t stop.

Dachshund

Dachshunds have a very powerful personality and yes, they do bark quite a lot at times. Manual set electric collars are the best for them.

Dalmatian

If you have a barking Dalmatian, an electric collar is very good. They tend to get excited very fast and they can be noisy too, so those collars are ideal for them.

Doberman

It’s one of those breeds that bark quite a lot. Electric bark collars are a natural fit for them.

Fox Terrier

Fox Terriers are territorial sometimes, and they are super active too. Static collars are ideal despite their smaller size.

French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are also very persistent and bark quite a lot. Static collars are, again, the best fit regardless of their size.

German Shepherd

If you own a German Shepherd, we highly recommend electric barking collars. They are intelligent, powerful, but also frequent barkers.

Golden Retriever / Retrievers

Here it all comes down to their age. With that in mind, a static unit is the best option since it’s also comfortable for them.

Great Dane

Static collars are preferred if you have a great Dane, because they are more efficient and deliver quick results.

Greyhound

Despite its size and agility, this breed is not known for barking. Spray barking collars are usually the best fit here, and that’s exactly the thing to keep in mind. A static collar should only be used if your dog is stubborn and headstrong.

GSP

GSPs love hunting and they do bark often, so an electric collar is usually the ideal fit.

Hungarian Vizsla

Even if this is more of a gentler breed, they do bark sometimes. That’s why we recommend an electric collar if possible.

Huntaway

Huntaways are herding dogs, and when they are not trained, they can bark quite a lot. Go for an electric barking collar and you will be fine.

Irish Wolfhound

An electric collar is enough for the Irish Wolfhound. They are not major barkers, but some specimens won’t stop barking and these collars will help.

Jack Russell

This is yet another breed where size doesn’t matter, they are major barkers and you have to go with an electric bark collar for the Jack Russell dogs!

Japanese Spitz

A Japanese Spitz will usually bark to protect their territory. In most cases you can use a Citronella Collar. Consistent barkers pertaining to this species will need a manual set static collar.

Kelpie

Kelpie dogs will usually be a good fit for the electric anti bark collars. Since they are a working dog, an electric collar is usually the best one.

Labrador

A static electric collar is preferred for most Labradors. There’s also success with spray barking collars, but this varies based on the individual.

Lhasa Apso

Lhasa Apso dogs are cute, very intelligent and also barkers! That’s why manual static collars or citronella collars will be a good fit.

Maltese

Despite their smaller size, Maltese dogs will bark quite a lot. Go with a manual static collar or a citronella collar.

Maremma Sheepdog

Static electric collars are great for these barkers.

Neapolitan Mastiff

Neapolitan Mastiff dogs are territorial and they will bark quite a lot. We recommend a static electric collar if possible.

Pomeranian

A Pomeranian can bark quite a lot. Due to their smaller size, finding an ideal bark collar can be hard. Static or spray collars will be fine.

Poodles

A poodle will usually be ok with a citronella bark collar. However, if your poodle is stubborn, then you can switch to a manual set static collar. The dog size might force you to go with certain collars depending on availability.

Pug

For a pug you will be fine with a Citronella bark collar. If the pug is stubborn and headstrong, then a manual static collar will do the trick.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

We recommend a manual set electric bark collar for the Rhodesian Ridgeback. They can bark at times, so these collars will be an ideal fit.

Rottweiler

A Rottweiler can become territorial and bark very often. An electric bark collar is the main choice for any Rottweiler.

Samoyed

A Samoyed doesn’t bark often, but they can get loud when they do bark eventually. You can use a spray bark collar if their coat length is short (otherwise a longer coat might stop the spray). If you have a Samoyed with long coat, you can choose a manual set electric collar.

Schnauzer

A Schnauzer does bark quite a lot, in their case a manual set electric collar is ideal for them. Spray collars should be used just as an alternative, if you can’t find a manual set electric collar that fits your Schnauzer’s size.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu dogs can bark quite a lot. In their case, a manual static collar or a citronella bark collar will be great.

Siberian Husky

For the Siberian Husky you can go with an electric collar.

Staffordshire Terrier

If you have a Staffordshire Terrier, you should consider getting a static collar, as this is ideal for them.

Weimaraner

Weimaraner dogs can bark quite a bit, so in their case you want to go for an electric bark collar.

Whippet

Whippet dogs are sensitive, and you can use a spray collar for them. However, if you have a stubborn Whippet, then you can go for a manual set electric unit.
