Can You Use a Robotic Lawn Mower if You Have a Hidden Fence?

Published on TueTue/OctOct/2023202320232023

If you have a hidden fence installed and are thinking of purchasing a robotic lawn mower, or you have a robotic lawn mower and are considering installing a hidden fence, you likely have a concern about the compatibility of the two working alongside one another in your yard. There are some considerations to be made, however, we’ve got good news – our hidden fences can work in close proximity with robotic lawnmowers without interference.

Before you jump in and make your purchase, let’s go over the background on the issue. Underground dog fences and robotic lawnmowers both use a buried wire that conducts a radio signal. And when you bury two wires that carry the same type of radio signal too close together, the clashing signals can cancel each other. The solution to this is to have the wires be far enough apart that the signals do not interfere with one another, or the signals need to be different altogether.

If the wires for either do not come close to each other and do not intersect or crossover, there’s nothing to worry about. However, in most yards, it is difficult to configure both systems so they are not close to each other and do not overlap. The other issue is that most hidden fence systems use an AM radio frequency similar to most electronic/robotic lawn mower signals. When these signals are too close to one another, they repel the signal – similar to how magnets work. If no signal is being emitted, one or the other (or both) of the units will not function.

Another consideration when installing a hidden fence and a robotic lawnmower that both utilize an AM signal is that the AM radio signal from the mower may accidentally trigger the receiver collar worn by your dog. In addition to needlessly giving the dog a correction signal from the collar, it may also confuse the dog regarding their fence boundary. Training your dog to expect a consistent boundary is an important part of why hidden fences are so effective.

In contrast, our hidden fence systems use a Digital FM radio signal. FM frequencies are less likely to experience interference from other radio signals, so the fence collar is less likely to activate in unexpected locations. Since most robotic lawn mowers operate on an AM signal, the two signals usually operate side-by-side without any interference.

In the unlikely event of interference occurring between a robotic lawn mower and your hidden fence, we are able to offer a solution. The majority of the time, adjusting the placement of the wires will solve the problem. In some other cases, a minor and fast adjustment of the frequency of the hidden fence will also work.

So, can you use a robotic lawnmower if you have a Hidden Fence? Absolutely. There is very little chance of interference due to the different radio signals. And, thankfully, in the rare case of signal interference, minor adjustments can be made that will solve the problem.

If you’re thinking of getting a Robot Lawn Mower then it might pay to speak to Robomow.nz as they are experts in installing both Hidden Dog Fences and Robot Lawn Mowers.
