Will My Dog Feel Trapped While Inside the Hidden Dog Fence?

Not once it gets used to it. In fact, after training, the hidden dog fence will provide both you and your dog with an astounding level of freedom. Dogs are territorial but can have trouble understanding the boundaries of their territory, especially when in heat or when agitated.

By giving it consistent audio and tactile feedback when reaching the limits of its territory, the dog immediately realizes where it’s meant to be, which helps it avoid venturing out into unknown territory.

The first few weeks can indeed be a little difficult for your dog when it's just starting to learn its boundaries. In those initial weeks, it may feel trapped or annoyed by the corrective electrical stimulation. But you have got nothing to worry about.

First, these hidden fences come with a built-in automatic shutdown feature so that your dog doesn’t get over-corrected. And secondly, they won't even realize that their adventures are being limited by a hidden fence once they get accustomed to it.

Will The Electrical Stimulation Hurt The Dog?

The receptors on your dog’s collar emit electrical stimulations, which are very different from electrical shocks. These transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulations (TENS) simply stimulate the nerves or sensory receptors.

In fact, TENS is also used to treat chronic muscle pain in humans. They indeed cause mild discomfort, but it's almost like an uncomfortable tingling sensation–unlike an electrical shock that is painful and can also cause burns.

How Old Does My Dog Need To Be For Hidden Fences?

The answer to this depends on multiple factors. Some puppies are ready at 16 weeks, while some take up to 20 weeks or more. Two factors determine if your puppy is ready to be trained for the hidden fence or not:

The age, size, and breed of your puppy
Their ability to understand basic commands like ‘sit, ‘walk,’ and ‘calm down.’

Will the Dog Resent Me for Installing a Hidden Dog Fence?

No! This is because dogs typically can’t relate a distant cause and effect. Your dog won’t be able to figure out that you buying a hidden dog fence has anything to do with the feedback given by the boundary.

Don’t feel bad for correcting your dog’s behavior either. As long as you discipline the dog rather than punish it, you will always earn its respect and adoration. The difference is that the former is done calmly while the latter is done in an agitated state of mind.

Will the Dog Agree to Go on Walks Once the Fence is Installed?

It's natural for you to worry if your dog will be willing to go for walks once they have been trained with the hidden fence. That’s why we encourage you to take them out for walks right from the beginning of training.

Dogs are intelligent, and they quickly learn from experience. By taking your dog on walks while training, it will realize that it's safe to go out when you accompany it. There won't be any audio tones or electrical stimulation in your presence. However, if they try to go out alone, the alarm will warn them to get back inside, and the electrical stimulation will force them inside if they refuse to obey the audio tone.

Once this psychology is developed, they will obey the command of the hidden fence and happily go on walks with you. If you need, we can also help you with the process of taking your dog on a walk while teaching them to obey the hidden fence’s commands.

Are These Hidden Fences Safe During Lightning?

The hidden fences only come with internal lightning protection, also known as surge protection. It's a lot like the surge protector that comes with your computer and other electronic devices. Their function is to protect the device and the structure inside it during thunderstorms and lightning.

However, while your hidden dog fence will be protected from most lightning storms, that doesn’t mean your pets will. Always use compassion and common sense when it comes to keeping your pets safe. Don’t leave them out during storms.

Can Cats Use Hidden Dog Fences?

Cats and dogs are the two most common domestic animals when it comes to adopting a new pet. And you can use the same kind of fence for both of them. They can be used both indoors as well as outdoors.

For outdoor use, this fence will ensure that your cat does not wander away from your house and for indoors, it will keep your cat from messing around a particular area where you don't want it.

However, it is always recommended that you use hidden fences that are specifically designed for cats. It takes many factors, including your pet’s breed, size, age, and personality, to be taken into account before we can adjust the perfect setting for the device.

Cats and dogs are very different from each other and need equally different approaches from these hidden fences. Hence, your best call here is to go for hidden cat fences.

Can the Hidden Dog Fence Be Used on Other Animals?

If you consider the theoretical aspect, then it will definitely work on every type of animal. However, practically speaking, it depends on quite a few factors. Mainly if the animal is as territorial as dogs and can grasp the existence of a boundary, it will work for them. However, for some skittish animals, you might notice the opposite effect of what you intended. Larger animals might even ignore the feedback and turn aggressive.

What is a SmartFence®?

The SmartFence is a hidden underground pet fencing system that utilizes a safe & harmless radio signal to keep your pet in and out of specific areas in your yard.

The SmartFence includes a notification system that alerts you to issues such as broken boundaries, low batteries, and even your pet's behavior trends.

Can I use a SmartFence® if I do not have Internet?

You can only use the containment fence without the internet. However, the communication system (notification alerts, system settings and activity tracking) will need an internet connection to properly operate.

Can I use a SmartFence® if I do not have a smartphone?

Yes, you can still get text messages and/or email alerts and you can access your SmartFence® WebApp profile from any computer or other Internet-enabled device.

Is the SmartFence® WebApp available on both iPhone and Android devices?

Yes, the SmartFence WebApp works on both iPhone and Android devices. The WebApp is not an “App” that you download in the App Store or Play Store. Instead, it is a progressive web app, accessible via any internet browser (Safari, Chrome, etc.). The WebApp can be saved to the home screen of your mobile device for easy access.

What happens when my dog’s SmartCollar® travels out of range of the Communication Portal?

The SmartCollar is designed with the understanding that your pet will probably spend time in parts of the yard that may be beyond the transmission range of your SmartFence Communication Portal.

What if I do not have an extra Ethernet port on my router?

The SmartFence requires the use of an Ethernet port. You may be able to add ports to your router by connecting it to an Ethernet switch. These devices should be available at local electronics and office supply stores or can be purchased from an online retailer.
